Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline has many questions as she anticipates her arrival in Cape Town

As we end the pre-departure class, I am getting more and more anxious about the arrival to Cape Town. Certain questions fill my mind such as "Who will I meet?" and "What will I learn?". The long plane ride seems to be the last thing on my mind right now. As I am learning more and more about Cape Town and have gotten the opportunity to hear Ted Talks from people we may get to meet in person, I am only more excited about who and what i'll encounter. During our last pre-departure class I mentioned in our final assignment that I wanted to experience new things in new land. Many other students want to go sky diving, hiking and be in the presence of wildlife. As all these activities are "foreign" to me, they are all ones I want to do as well. I cant wait to see what role I will play in my internship site. I wonder not only how I will impact others but how others will impact me. As I am mostly focused on finals right now, it is hard to only think about my stay in South Africa but the thought of it usually fills my mind at night. The one thing I said I wouldn't do, was bring my biased judgments about Cape Town with me as I am still looking at the country as if it is the whole continent. Maybe when I get to JFK things will sink in a little harder! ....And the countdown begins...
