Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex L discovers how nice it felt to lend a helping hand

This past week has been very laid back, and I can feel myself finally starting to get into a routine here. I enjoy Thursday’s classes because I learn so much in such a short period of time and more and more things start to make sense and fall into place about South Africa as a whole. Being on the UCT campus is also a perk because it is so beautiful with interesting people everywhere.  The first time I didn’t feel like an outsider was when someone came up to me on campus asking where a building was, while I was unfortunately just as clueless as he was.

Today however was the best I’ve felt since my whole time being here, and it was the simplest moment that produced this feeling. As I’m speed walking home from my internship because of things I wanted to get done, I see a family struggling to push a car in order for it to start. I walked past not thinking much of it, then involuntarily I turned around to ask if they needed help. Of course they did, there were three little boys trying to push a car and it’s not budging. So, myself and another stranger start pushing and after a few tries it finally works. The little boys run into the car and they are on their way; I couldn’t help but laugh at how much it reminded me of the movie Little Miss Sunshine. The stranger and I high fived, and then went our own ways. It was such a simple moment, that took about three minutes out of my day but I can’t even describe how nice it felt helping someone else with absolutely nothing in return.  I think about how in America, and of course many other places in the world, people are so entirely caught up in their own world and don’t pay much attention to anything or anyone else, so if everyone stopped to do one tiny little thing that could help someone out, imagine how much nicer this world would be.
