Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Sydney's placement very enlightening and fun

This past week has been one of the best and one of the most challenging times that I have had in a while. I am use to taking public transportation and having a lot on my plate but the transition was more difficult than I originally thought. I think one of the biggest challenges for me is managing my time and not overloading my schedule. Since there is so much to do I always say yes when someone invites me somewhere or an opportunity presents itself. However because of this week I know what I need to change and will be less stressed.

Working at my internship has been very enlightening and fun for me. Learning about baboons, the difficulties the organization is facing trying to manage them and getting to know the ins and outs of the organization is something I wouldn’t give up. Going out to the different sites and seeing the baboon troops in their natural habitat is amazing. I know there is a lot of conflict with baboons coming into people’s homes and taking their food which is not good, but seeing them just going about their lives I can’t get mad at them for trying to survive. I think it’s hard to coexist with the wildlife around us but I think it is our responsibility to understand that as we expand outwards the animals are losing the space they need and interaction with them is going to happen.

In addition everyone at my internship is open to answering questions I have and always try to give me work that they think will be interesting for me. I especially appreciate that the people I work with care about my opinion and want to know about the management we have in America. They treat me as an equal which is great because it gives me the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge I have gained in class in a real life setting. Thanks to this willingness to include me in different projects and explaining things to me I am starting to figure out what I want to do in my future. I have discovered that sitting in an office all day reading and writing is not what I enjoy and I would prefer to have a career in which I have opportunities to go out into the field.

In all this week has been action packed and I look forward to seeing what these next weeks have in store for me. Especially heating the thoughts of my fellow peers on what we are learning in class, along with their experiences since they have been in Cape Town.
