Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Emily enjoying Cape Town: the music, the educational experiences, and the beauty of the great outdoors

Libby & Emily
Since the end of orientation I have very much enjoyed experiencing Cape Town and it’s surrounding areas in smaller groups. Though I have always been very interested in music, I did not expect to enjoy the music that Cape Town has to offer so much. This past Saturday I went to the Waterfront for an hour-long performance by the Little Giants and was floored by their talent. Since it seems that most everyone in Cape Town is very musically talented I hope to continue to attend as many performances as I can. After watching their set we went out to dinner and enjoyed an incredible view on the water followed by some much-needed gelato.

On Thursday we went to UCT for our first classes with Vincent and I loved getting to learn more about the history of this place while simultaneously realizing that I knew more than I though simply from living here for a few weeks. I think it will be very helpful to supplement all that we’re absorbing outside of the classroom with concrete information inside of the classroom.

On Friday we went to the beach for the first time and the beauty there equally astounded me. I’ve never been a huge fan of going to the beach, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt quite so content as I did upon arriving at Muizenberg. The view of the mountains against the backdrop of the very clear water and white soft sands was impossible to get over. Though the water was pretty cold and the sunburn I suffered is still causing me some pain, it was nice to have a relaxing day of lying out and reading. After coming back from the beach and doing a bit of research into Muizenberg I learned a bit about the history of the area and it’s role as a white’s only beach. It was strange to consider the legacy of such a beautiful place so bound by a horrible policy of separateness. This strangeness extends to a lot of things we’ve seen in Cape Town and though it can sometimes be a hard pill to swallow, I think it is important to acknowledge just how recently much of the beauty around us was only allowed to be enjoyed by the privileged few.
