WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Libby's wonderfully exciting and enjoyable 3 days

We had our first set of classes on Thursday, starting at UCT. I cannot get over how beautiful the campus is; I feel like I’m walking through a palace when I am there! We had two classes with Vincent and they were so engaging. It was great to have all of the history of South Africa wrapped up together, because I have gotten bits and pieces of it but never a really set time line of how and when everything happened, so that was great!!

On Friday a few of us from Campground went to Muizenberg beach, and it was amazing. The beach was beautiful and had the mountains in the background, which was just so peaceful. We saw some others from our group there for surfing lessons, which I definitely need to do at some point! Then for dinner we went to Sticks McGee’s, which had a live band playing that was just amazing. They had so much passion and loved the music they were playing so much, Elizabeth and I ended up staying until they were done playing!

Saturday was quite the day. Becca, Abby, Trista and I all decided to hike Table Mountain. It was definitely a crazy experience! The hike took a lot longer than I expected, and going up was brutal. The ascent was all up hill and pretty steep, I honestly thought at some points that I wasn’t going to make it. There were some areas that had ladders you had to take which was pretty awesome and very scary. The top of the mountain was the best part. Once we were pretty close to the top we looked out and the views were just gorgeous. It honestly looked to me like a scene from The Lord of the Rings!! Very cool, I was definitely in a state of awe just looking at how beautiful this country is from way up high. But the mountain is never ending. We would get to one point and think we were at the top, only to look up and see that there was more! And that probably happened about 4 times, until at last we had reached the absolute top. At one point we got lost and met a guy from Germany and a girl from Switzerland, who we climbed to the top with and had a great conversation about why they were here and what their aspirations are for the future as well. The problem we ran into was coming back down. We got lost and ended up wandering around the top of the mountain for a couple of hours, and then the hike down was another 3. All in all we hiked 12 miles in 8 hours, it was brutal but totally worth it!
