Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Bryan's creating a routine schedule

I think that I am finally starting to create sort of a routine schedule for myself and it is making time fly by so much faster than it was the first week which I haven’t decided if this is good or bad. Some of the highlights to this week were the Campaign Café which was an activity held by my internship which helped members think critically about how to build a campaign around an issue. I think that what I learned in those 4 hours will definitely be useful to me when I return home and start my getting into activism in my own right. Another thing that I noticed at my Internship program was my ability to be comfortable speaking to groups of activists who have decades worth of experience and being able to feel as though I belong in the room. One weird thing that happened at this activity was one of the people their compared Manenberg to Brooklyn and they said that they have no intention to go to either ever again. This was weird because even though I’m not from Brooklyn but a similar place. I began to think back to my first visit to townships and the familiarity that I felt while walking through them, but also my level of comfortability being in this terrible environment as some would call it and what that means about me as a person.

Another thing of importance that happened this week was the gym at UCT for me and I know this might sound weird but I have met and conversed with more students this way and have made connections with people to the point where when I walk down main road people recognize me and ask me if I’m going to go lift today which to me is an amazing feeling because in my opinion it is praise for one of my passions in life and hopefully I can continue to meet new faces in my time here. I also ended up doing exactly what I said I wouldn’t do which was to do activities that I could do in America here. I felt that it wasn’t really getting the Cape Town feel but actually reverting back to something familiar. So I ended up going to the movie theater to watch Deadpool, which I have to say was actually a good movie and surpassed my expectations which led me to continue down this path and I eventually went to the Cinnabon which was located in the mall also, but I must say they tasted much better here than in America or at least in my opinion. After this experience I will try to stay away from these types of activities if I can as I feel they will take away from the experience (unless a really good movie comes out then I have to see it).
