Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline finding a project of interest

So as another week comes to an end, I can only be relieved that I finally know how I’ll be using my time in regards to my activist project. At first, I wanted to create a workshop but knowing that I haven’t developed the personal skills in order to facilitate a workshop, I’m kind of glad that this wouldn’t represent my activist project. As a popular topic at City Missions Educational Services seems to be in regards to Coloured people and how social issues pertain to them in South Africa, my original idea was to facilitate a workshop in which Coloured and Blacks in South Africa would “bridge the gap” between the two races by dismantling any prejudices and hierarchies that have been established through the apartheid. Even though I won’t be taking part in this kind of workshop, I am sure it has been done before and I would like to see future students take on this project.

Thankfully, “Mam Jolene” as the students refer to her as, has asked me to be a part of putting together a play for the students at CMES and immediately knew this would be my activist project. I can’t wait to put time into this project and I’ll definitely be updating everyone on this project in later blog posts. As time is flying and the start of March is almost here I have to remember to tell myself to not worry about time and just have fun. There are still so many things I want to do in Cape Town and some of these activities happen to be hiking Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, going to another football game and exploring more random shops in town where I hopefully will find gifts to bring home for family. I am anticipating the excursion in Johannesburg and I feel like the safari will be the highlight of the week…but I won’t speak to soon! For now, I am working hard to make sure that the students at CMES prepare themselves for a wonderful performance in April and I know I’ll be shocked to see how talented they are outside of the confines of a classroom.
