Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Libby could not ask for anything more (almost)

Today was my first day at my internship at Sarah Fox Children’s Hospital. I honestly had no idea what to expect and was nervous to see what we were going to be doing. But right when we got there, I didn’t feel out of place at all. The first thing going on was feeding the children breakfast, and a nurse handed me a bowl of porridge and told me I could help the little girl I was next to eat. The kids were all so excited to see Mariko, Collette and I and were happy to accept our help eating, besides the girl Mariko was helping who refused to let anyone touch her spoon besides herself! We were at first in the older children’s ward but we ended up switching to the babies ward to help out there. We met another girl from America who has already been at Sarah Fox for a month, working with the occupational therapist. She was super nice and helpful telling us how the hospital worked and what we can do. There are meetings every Tuesday with the doctor about new patients that come in and we get to learn what their condition is and how to treat them, so I’m really looking forward to that!

Everything else has been so great as well. I am sad that orientation is officially over but I am excited to get into the swing of normal daily life and be able to have more free time to explore South Africa! Yesterday, which was a Sunday, we tried to use the train station in Rondebosch to go to the beach, but ended up waiting an hour for the train but eventually gave up. However we did run into another group of American students, who happened to know someone who came on the UConn trip last year! So that was really cool and it’s just interesting to see other Americans here and learn about their program and so on.

I am really looking forward to class on Thursday at UCT. The campus is so beautiful it makes me want to be there every day! I plan to go there more often after my internship to get work done since their wifi is really good and it just seems like a good place to study.

Overall everything is going great! I could not ask for anything more, except maybe a bigger freezer J
