Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex Z brief summary of her excursionAle

Kruger was absolutely stunning, and pretty mind-blowing. Just to drive to our housing from the gate was an hour. The place was approximately the size of Massachusetts and home to the most beautiful animals. We were able to see everything in the Big 5, but the leopards. The two highlights for me were the sighting of the lioness with seven lion cubs that crossed the road in front of us, and the massive elephant that approached our truck. The sunrises and sunsets were equally incredible. In Joburg itself, the Apartheid Museum and the Boys and Girls Club of Soweto worked wonders on my heart. The museum drove me to tears after questioning humanity dozens of times and seeing the raw and terrible footage of the Sharpville Massacre. I could and couldn’t believe that humans were capable of such destruction. Seeing the remnants of the Holocaust made me aware of such chaos, but to see history repeat itself in such a devastating way was discouraging. On a lighter note, the Boys and Girls Club was incredible. I’m typically not one for kids, but these children we interacted with were rays of sunshine. All of them were sweet and energetic and all just wanted to be close to us. They were interested in my hair, my phone and a million other things about me. I just wanted to know where they drew all of their strength from. Those kids deserve everything.
