WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Bryan getting started on his activist project

This week was very interesting/normal due to the fact that I was able to finally visit my activist project location. The delay was caused by a lack of volunteer training days by SARDA (South African Riding for the Disabled Association), which forced me and some of my classmates to wait almost two weeks in order to find an opening. We were scheduled to have the training on Monday but due to some complications with our transportation, my group ended up arriving just as it ended. I truly thought at the time that we must have made the worst first impressions in history, but the staff was actually really understanding about what happened and offered us other opportunities that week to receive training. Due to scheduling issues with the Ocean View Homestay, I was stuck doing a private training session if you will consider that I was the only person who chose that day to receive training. I was able to learn the ins and outs in regards to what specific accessories for the horses are called and a general rundown of important locations on the SARDA Centre premises and procedures to follow. The particular task that I was assigned was to lead the horse. I was actually amazed when I went in for training because I did not expect to actually have to lead a horse on my first day. The experience was kind of weird especially when turning because you have to lean into the horse or nudge it (only when the horse is being difficult). Overall I think that this organization will be really interesting and will provide me with experience and knowledge of a field that I don’t interact with on a daily basis.

Another thing that was interesting was the fact that my internship organization attended a National meeting, which meant in hind sight that I was only supposed to come to work on Wednesday instead of three day a week. This extra free time was spent catching up with work related to classes and related to my internship.
