WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Libbys great weekend in Ocean View

This past weekend I went on the homestay and it was so much fun! Isabel and I stayed with the Abrahams family, with Uncle Freddy and Auntie Anne as our host parents. We got there on Thursday and had dinner with our host family. We had a great conversation and really got to know them that first night. Then around 8pm we went to ballroom dancing! That was so much fun. We jumped right in and started learning the steps to the cha-cha. I wasn’t very good but was just trying to go with it and have fun! Then we had to partner up and that’s when I really started to understand the steps because it was easier to figure it out when you were actually doing the steps the way you’re supposed to with someone else! Next we learned the jive, which I just could not master at all. Even when we were first learning the initial steps I could not figure it out, because the steps are just too quick! Then we partnered up and thankfully my partner was amazing and patient with me, but I still couldn’t really get it. Last we learned the waltz, and that one was the easiest. My partner was very good and he guided me along, but I felt like I was getting it down pretty well! We also got to watch the kids in the class dance together and they were so amazing. It was such a great night!

Friday morning we got up early, ate breakfast, and Isabel and I went over to the house where Bryan and Eric were staying to play with the children at the daycare there. The kids were so adorable and excited to see us and played with (ripped) my hair out which was fun. Then we headed with them to the Muizenberg pools for the day. That was a lot of fun because the kids were so excited to be there and they had such a blast. We stayed there for a lot of the day and around 2 the kids left. Then the group of us walked to Kalk Bay and that was a really cool area. They had all of these unique shops so it was nice to explore! Then we took a train and a taxi back to Ocean View. There we had dinner back at home with our family. After that Isabel and I went across the street to hang out with Eric and Bryan and their host family! The next day we woke up and went to the mall with our family. We had breakfast at Spurs which was delicious and then we just shopped for a bit. Isabel and I decided to buy ingredients to make brownies that night. We came back from the mall and went to this farm nearby. It was super cute and had lots of nice little shops, so it was fun to go with our host parents! Then we came home and started cooking for the braai. Auntie Anne and Uncle Freddy made the most delicious food for our braai and we ate soooo much. Isabel and I made our brownies which we served after dinner. Lots of our host family’s friends and family started to come over right at that time so we dished out ice cream and brownies for everyone, which they were grateful for. Eric and Bryan came over so we gave them some desert too. Sunday we woke up early for church. Uncle Freddy is a pastor and he has so much energy so it was great. Our host sister Kim is a great singer so she sang the songs! Then we came back and had a really nice lunch and then went to watch the cycling race. That was very exciting and cool to watch. We went back home and then it was already time to leave! It was a really great weekend and I’m glad I could have been a part of it!
