Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Kayla in disbelief how quickly time is passing

I am in complete disbelief that we only have 7 weeks left in Cape Town. It really feels like just yesterday we were on orientation and then I realize we have been here for longer than we have left. I am really excited by all the amazing things we have been able to do since being here but I am nervous I won’t have enough time to complete everything on my bucket list.

I’ve had a really great week thus far. On Wednesday, Emily and I gave a human rights presentation to women of Khayelitsha. The women can speak conversational English but don’t speak English fluently. Therefore, so we had to a have a translator help us convey the information in Xhosa. I was nervous that the women wouldn’t enjoy the presentation because of the language barrier but afterwards it was an amazing feeling have women hug and thank us for the presentation.

We met with a woman on Monday who had a very terrible black eye. She was uncomfortable sharing her story but she did say she was fighting with her boyfriend often. By the time we saw her again on Wednesday, she had a second black eye. Seeing this kind of abuse happening is very emotionally taxing for me but ultimately knowing that I may be helping empower that woman makes working at Prevention in Action completely worth it.

Isabelle, Maria, Meghan, Trista, Elizabeth, Mary, and I went to beach yoga yesterday at Clifton Beach. The yoga session was definitely not for beginners but toppling over in the sand was still a fun time. At the end of the yoga session the instructor spoke about being thankful for all the loving friends surrounding you and being thankful for your surroundings. Hearing her say that really made me think not only am I so lucky to have had the opportunity to be in Cape Town currently, but I am also lucky to be surrounded by such amazing and hard working people constantly.
