WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Alex Z feeling overwhelmingly happy here

With each passing week, I am having a harder and harder time seeing myself go back to the states. I have never been in a place that has felt so home away from "home". I'm excited and anticipating the next day, while already caught up in and enjoying the day as it happens. It's almost overwhelming how happy I am here.

This week was yet another amazing one. Working at the aquarium never disappoints; we received a new intern, Sarah, who I instantly connected with and mingles well with the rest of my coworkers. We had a staff party, which was pirate themed and everyone went all out. It had a great vibe and I baked more cookies and cupcakes than necessary and they disappeared in five minutes flat after everyone descended on them. I am now taking my dive course and am both nervous and excited for this underwater world (I've kept my desire to become a mermaid quiet, but the anticipation to get in the ocean is killing me).

I am finally over my sickness(es) and can literally take a deep breath of relief. And can finally get back to running and all that jazz, since taking the time off in addition to delicious Cape Town food has done damage to my figure.

Ugh, the food. Last night, Abby, Simon and I went to The Fat Cactus for Mexican, which was amazing. I've also been introduced to Lunch Bars and Yellow Curry with chicken and potatoes at Saigon, which I would absolutely recommend. Abby and I are attempting to cleanse our fridges to counteract our intake, and for the most part are having success.

This week will be quite hectic with my dive course, homestay and homework in between, but I'm looking forward to it being productive. The weather makes it a lot easier to stay positive with all the work, but also more distracting since the beach is constantly calling my attention.
