Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline wants to be grateful for every experience

Pauline at Mandela House in Soweto

As I reflect on the whole Johannesburg excursion I know that it was all worth the wait. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I was surrounded by wildlife and the only thing that separated me from the lions, rhinos and elephants was a small open truck.  I also really enjoyed interacting with the children of the Boys and Girls Club. Even though there are many branches of this organization in the states, I had never took the time to explore the Boys and Girls Club back at home and it was cool to be able to do so for the first time in South Africa. As I work with the youth in my internship, this allowed me to interact with kids in a more social and hands on way. I was a little overwhelmed and restful by the time the day was over, but I know that all of the activities of the day were to cater to the children’s experiences.

As I have been back in Cape Town for only a few days since the excursion, my mind is not set to go back to my internship tomorrow. With only a month left of exploring Cape Town and all it has to offer I have comprised a list of things I want to do before going home. I have not gone to The Crypt yet and it seems like a place for jazz lovers. Even though Jazz isn’t my favorite music I still love great vibes so I must check this place out. Also, I still have to hike Table Mountain and take nice photos once I reach the top. Now that I have purchased a new camera, I find that I want to be everywhere and take a photo to document me being in each place. I don’t want to get caught up in being a tourist and more interested in the photos rather than the experience. For most of my time in Cape Town I have not had a camera to take photos and I was just full of bliss in every moment in Cape Town. Even though I now have a camera, I still want to be grateful of every experience and not settle on photos to make me appreciate my journey through Cape Town.
