WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex Z discovering the heart that lies Paulinein the center of Ocean

The homestay this week was extremely eye opening. I’m very glad that I got to experience the way another group lives, half way across the world. I saw a more “poor” community, but one that has a huge heart right in the center of it. Just seeing Chantel say hello to almost everyone in the street and the how we visited many neighbors houses showed the extent of the welcoming attitude everyone projected. My favorite part of the weekend was definitely the ballroom dancing with the kids. Immediately, they grabbed your hand and made you feel welcome, despite my two left feet for everything except for the chacha. I tried ox stomach (not a fan) and koeksisters (a HUGE fan) which were new things for me. My host family was extremely sweet (shoutout to Carlin and crew) and did their very best to cater to Pauline, Amelia and I. I hope the community of Ocean View carries on its pride and cultivates their community even further.
