Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex Z recaps her week

Monday was a great day at work and ended even better with a trip to Glen Beach to relax. I even did some homework (shocker) and read a bit while I was there. The sunset with the Twelve Apostles in the background is a scene that I will never forget. Even just two minutes makes such a difference in the sun’s light.

Tuesday was a fairly slow day at the aquarium, but my coworkers and I were excited to go to dinner together later in Gardens. Lone, Emma, Sarah, and her roommate Marc came to the restaurant and we had a great meal of tapas and jam jars.

Thursday night I went to my first brewery with Sarah and Marc and had a great time meeting their housemates. They braaied on the balcony and I struck up a conversation about classic cars with a girl I had just met; needless to say it was an excellent time.

My Friday began with my activist project. We swept floors and painted in preparation for the ceremony to the group that is funding the house. Afterwards, I drove to the airport BECAUSE MY MOM HAD ARRIVED FINALLY!!! She came on the flight from hell (after having a 10 hour unexpected delay in Paris and had to arrange a flight for herself once she got to Joburg, an indirect place she was not supposed to go), but was in a good mood after I immersed her in the Cape Town vibe. I took her to Di Vinci’s in Tamboerskloof with my coworkers and then dropped her off to her flat to rest while I went to a party with my coworkers in the waterfront apartments.

Saturday, I took my mom to the Old Biscuit Mill and she loved the food market and leather bags. We popped into various places along the way back to the car, and the vintage wood was another highlight to the morning. I took her to Fat Cactus for quesadillas and a few pitchers of margaritas.

Sunday, we went to Simon’s house around 5:45am and began our hike up the Diagonal Trail at Table Mountain. The four hour hike (just up, may I add) was both strenuous and stunning. The vertical climbs and intense cliffs were enough to make most turn around and head home. When we got to the cable car, there were sighs of relief, and a lot of fist pumps of accomplishment.
