Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline's unforgettable homestay experience

So, this weekend involved me spending time in Ocean View and though I will write a reflection paper on my experience, I thought that I could give brief details about what I endured and felt during my stay away from Rondebosch. I first want to admit that I was a little worrisome about the homestay because I imagined not knowing how to interact with my host family and just coming from completely different backgrounds. I also imagined not liking the meals that would be prepared for breakfast, lunch and dinner because they would be too “foreign” for my liking. I ended up crying in front of Chantel on Sunday because I was disappointed that the weekend would fly by as quickly as it did.

My host mom and dad became my parents here in Cape Town. I know that the reason I was so emotional was because I had come across and had to live with a family that was so giving and so relatable. Carlin and Nigel, the names of my host parents, showed me and my roommates around to their closest friends and family in Ocean View and that made me feel so welcomed into their neighborhood. It was just an overall unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to discuss it more in my reflection paper.

In regards to my activist project, I have been thinking about committing to community service during the remaining weekends we have left during our program and just detailing what this community service consists of me doing. I am at the point where I just want to help out anyone or any cause and I feel that there are so many ways to do so. As I am back at campground for another week of classes and interning, I can only prepare myself for the upcoming stay in Johannesburg. My camera has been broken since arriving in Cape Town and I know that I must buy a new camera before this weekend. I see all of the pictures that everyone else is sharing with friends and family and I realize that time is flying by and I may end up going home without anything to show for my three and a half month stay in South Africa.
