Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Becca looking forward to the adventures that await

The first thing I noticed as I flew into South Africa was the striking line between the rich communities and the townships. There didn’t seem to be any gradient—only a road separating beautiful white stucco mansions and makeshift tin homes crammed against each other. When I got off the plane, Marita was waiting for me.

We wandered around the airport and after a lot of confusion figured out when the rest of the group would be flying in. I was (and am) exhausted. We arrived at the bigger house where 17 out of 29 of use are staying and hung around by the pool while we waited for the rest of the group to unload their things. After a brief meeting, we drove over to the smaller house, where I’m living and chose our rooms and enjoyed some South African snacks. I discovered I love gooseberries. For dinner we ordered pizza (the best one had spicy guacamole and bacon on it).

Cape Town is beautiful and I am looking forward to the adventures that await me.
