Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Mary eager for what's ahead

First, I'm really glad we all had to fly to SA together on our own because it definitely helped us bond. We had to figure out the airports and where to go and handle little issues (like when the first luggage check area closed). Also I got stuck at customs in Johannesburg because my Visa was a little different than everyone else's, so that was kind of scary. They took me to a back waiting room where I tried contacting Marita (and also tried not to panic). Luckily they let me through!

When we first got here we experienced the South African heat which is still very hard to adjust to, especially coming from New England winter! We met our RA's Molly and Renee who are both absolutely wonderful! I've gotten to know them better since the first day and I really like them.

We went to our houses after we arrived and they are both amazing! The layout and feel of the houses are great and I love the rooms. I'm

so glad Marita and Vernon found this one because I love it! It's also in such a good location to the first house.

I didn't really experience culture shock (and still haven't) as much as I expected. Some things are obviously different and it's still hard crossing the road sometimes (since they drive on the other side), but mostly it's been fine. This might change once the internships start.

I love seeing the cool scenic views, museums, shopping, touring, and other things we've been doing on orientation so far. Also the restaurants, it's great trying new food! It is a lot sometimes though; the days are always very full and totally packed so it would be nice to have some down time too. I wish we had a free day or something.

Overall I'm glad to start getting used to the city and mainly I'm happy about getting to really know the other students and people I will be living with for the next 3 1/2 months. I already know many of them so much better than when we started. The people in Cape Town seem very friendly too which is great. I like this trip already and I'm eager for what's ahead!
