Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Caroline finding Cape Town absolutely brimming with talent

Cape Town is by far the most incredible and inspiring place I have ever been. The most striking thing I've noticed, besides the overwhelming beauty of the place, is that the city is absolutely brimming with talent. In the short amount of time that I've spent here, I have been truly astounded by the caliber of artists, musicians, and just simply great humans that I have encountered. In the township of Langa, our group met several artists working on different crafts such as pottery, mosaics, and sand art paintings that were so beautiful. We also were able to play in a drum circle there which was a ton of fun, and I even got to play the marimba!

The Power of Listening
Cape Town is simply overflowing with musics and I find myself becoming enamored with the style and feel of the city. Three nights in a row I was lucky enough to listen to live music and even introduce myself to some of the most talented musicians I have ever encountered. My favorites include watching a Cape Town jazz band called Zingara and having the honor to listen to Mteto Maphoyi sing beautiful Italian opera. Before we left for Cape Town, we watched Mteto's Ted Talk and I was amazed by the challenges he has overcome, his passion for music, and his incredible voice. Here's the link to his Ted Talk: The Power of Listening  Hearing Mteto sing gave me the chills. I was starstruck when I got the opportunity to shake his hand after his performance.

Right now, I feel extremely lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to experience the charm and wonder that Cape Town holds for the next three months. I know I'll be frequenting jazz venues and exposing myself to as much music and art as I can. I cannot wait to see what Cape Town has in store for me!
