WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Bryan contemplates what it means to him to be an American

After taking the Pre-Departure course one of the things that stuck out to me was from the 3rd unit on South Africa. In this unit some of the potential questions that we could be asked about America from local residents made me critically think about what I represent. The question in particular that I thought of was what does it mean to be American? This question seemed so easy to define to me when I speak to other Americans, but the challenge became how to describe being American to someone who has only read or seen videos about your country. I think that by taking this question into consideration I will be able to give my best attempt to represent what being American truly is and I will be able to teach residents of South Africa something about myself.
