Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Mary feeling more at home

These past few days we have been visiting everyone's internship. I was nervous and excited to see my internship, Africa Unite. It turned out to be great! The people seem really nice and passionate about their work, and I'm excited to help with Human Rights Training Weekend. I got a good vibe from the organization and I can't wait to start interning!

I loved seeing everyone else's internship too. It was so cool seeing so many different organizations that combat various issues in South Africa. It's interesting to see what issues there are still present, and I'm glad to see so many placements trying to help.

Another thing I like so far is bonding with the other students. I love getting to know my roomie, housemates, and everyone else! I feel more at home here the more I get to know other people.

Last, some struggles I've faced so far include the bad WiFi (it's hard to call home) and grocery shopping and cooking for myself. I've never had to cook for myself since I have always lived on campus and had a meal plan, so this was a struggle. As sad as it is, I wasn't even sure how to cook chicken. So this will definitely be a learning experience for me!
