Something
that I have learned in the pre-departure class that I believe is valuable for
me to know before heading to Cape Town is all of the history of Cape Town and
what the people have gone through to get to where they are today. I knew of
apartheid but I did not know the extent to which people were segregated and
treated so differently, just on the basis of their skin color. I think this is
important to know because it has a lot to do with how their culture is shaped
today and the effects of apartheid are still reminiscent in their day to day
lives. I think another important thing I learned in the pre-departure class was
more about the other students going to Cape Town as well. I am grateful of the
course because if not for it, I would not feel so comfortable going to another
continent with them, because I would still be getting to know them. But because
of the course I feel very comfortable and feel as though I know the others on a
good level to just be excited to start this journey together!
