Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Kayla so excited it feels surreal

I cannot believe we leave for Cape Town in just 8 days. I have began to pack and make lists of things I need to get before leaving which is making leaving feel all the more real. I am so nervous and excited for what is to come.

The pre-departure class was very valuable in making me feel comfortable leaving. While I don’t think any college student will ever feel completely comfortable leaving their home and their country for 4 months, this class has made me as comfortable as I think I could ever be. Meeting the other students going on the trip and knowing that such amazing people will surround me is comforting in and of itself. The research we had to do not only on South Africa but also on America has also made me feel better about leaving. I now feel like I can have a more educated conversation with people I encounter on something like how our American government compares to the government of South Africa, which I think is very unique to other students going abroad. Most students learn everything about where they will be traveling once they are there, but I feel very glad that we were able to learn at least some basic things about South Africa before we leave.

I am so excited to leave on Thursday! I have been looking forward to this trip for so long it is very surreal to think the time is actually coming.
