Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Bryan's first impressions

For me the drive home was the true moment for me being in South Africa. I consider it the first moment, because it was the house  for me counted as the first site of this trip. When I was going to the airport and boarding the flight it was almost a moment of self-realization that this trip was actually happening. The house was actually a lot better than the pictures we received made it seem and I can honestly say that we pretty much got lucky. The rooms had plenty of space and there was even a pool. The second day was as expected it was a relaxed day where we got more of an overview of our surrounding area and what we could expect. This overview included a security briefing which if I could sum up basically said to act like you have some street smarts and don’t act like an oblivious American and understand that everywhere has its good and bad and you have to be prepared and consider both sides when traveling. The highlight of the second day was the dinner at ChoiYo Thai Restaurant I had never had Thai food before and the food was actually quite delicious. The third day had some amazing moments including the trip to fourth beach which had an amazing view of the mountains and water. We also had to go up this huge cliff (Chapman Peak) with the bus that had to make very sharp turns which made me think the bus would definitely crash but it was all worth it in the end to eat at the Two Oceans Restaurant and to be able to climb to this light house where I experienced the true power of wind. It was so windy that it felt like you could be pushed off if you didn’t brace yourself but it was definitely an experience that I will remember.
