Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Isabel's building excitement: 10 days to Cape Town

We are just ten days away from our arrival in Cape Town and I cannot believe how fast it has all approached.  It has been a busy holiday break, but I have been able to spend some valuable time with my friends and family.  Cape Town holds a great amount of adventure and challenge and I am more than ready to get started on this journey.

There were several things that made the pre-departure course so valuable to me last semester.  As many of my classmates have shared, the course brought us all together.  We got to know one another, put a face to a name, and hear each other’s views and opinions.  The course gave us a way to bounce ideas and concerns off of one another and that took a lot of the fear away from this experience as a whole.  Some of my peers who have gone abroad have traveled there alone without knowing anyone beforehand.  The course took us away from our busy schedules and allowed us get to know who we would be spending next semester with.

Another part I enjoyed most about the course was the way Marita set up this large amount of information.  We are traveling, learning, and working in an entirely different culture and there is a lot that comes with that.  Marita gave me a large amount of confidence that I was prepared to live in another country.  Everything we were given to go over and discuss was valuable information.  I feel informed and ready to answer questions if they come my way and that is something I don’t know if I could’ve accomplished on my own.

It is an intimidating thing to go overseas for three months, but this course gave us some added comfort.  In addition, I think I can speak for everyone when I say it gave us all a huge amount of excitement.  See you all in just 10 DAYS!
