Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Abby's packed weekend

This weekend was really packed and awesome. Friday morning, Trista and I went surfing at Muizenberg and I had the best time. It was a two-hour lesson and we had awesome instructors who taught us techniques on land and then helped us implement them in the water. I actually stood 3 times and one of the girls asked me if I had done it before so I felt pretty good about myself! I have surfed once before but I was 13 so it’s definitely been a while. But I had a lot of fun being in the ocean even though I fell off of my board most of the time. After that, I had the best burger I’ve had in my entire life. We stopped at Gary’s Surfing School’s café and I ordered the guacamole burger which actually melted in my mouth. I need to go back and ask what sauce they put on it. Later, I went to a brewery tour which was a lot of fun. It was only R50 for the tour, 5 tastings, and 2 whole beers! I love beer so it was a great change from the wine tours. Then we ended the day by going to Saigon where I ordered pho that was amazing. I have been craving good Asian food so I’m glad we found that restaurant.

Saturday morning, we went shopping with Power and Bongi to start using the money we raised through Go Fund Me. We ordered a new set of uniforms and then bought balls and cones. We will be spending the rest of the money on various fees they need throughout the season. That was the first time I have ever seen Bongi speechless and for those who have not met him, he is the most energized talkative person I have ever met. I’m really happy that we can help make their soccer club a success to provide an outlet for boys in Khayelitsha.

Later that day, I hiked Lion’s Head with Trista and her mom. This and surfing were big things on my to-do list, so I’m very happy to have done both. We got a little lost on the way there, but it made us hike later and allowed us to see the sunset on the way down, which was beautiful. I think I liked the hike better than Table Mountain. For one, it was easier and shorter, but also the view was a lot better. You get a 360-degree view of all of Cape Town, including Table Mountain. The only other major hike I’m hoping to do before I leave is Devil’s Peak so I hope I get to fit that in.

Sunday morning, we went to Simonstown to kayak with penguins which was also a lot of fun. Sydney was my kayaking partner and I quickly learned that she had never done it before. We weren’t moving in the beginning and I couldn’t understand why I was facing so much resistance until I looked around and discovered that Sydney was paddling backwards. It took us a while to get in sync, but we eventually paddled to the front of the pack and proved everyone wrong. I also visited the Bo Kaap with Alex and her mother which was very beautiful. Then to end the day, we had dinner with Alex’s co-worker’s family and it was delicious. It was nice to have a family dinner for once.
