Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Collette keeping it low-key now that she's checked off everything on her bucket list

With everything coming to a close in three weeks, it seems as though everyone is trying to pack as much into every free moment as possible. As far as adventures go, I finally got to hike Table last Monday, which was about several months too late, but better late than never. It was so beautiful up there, but since we went through a bit of a cold spell, I was freezing up at the top. Amelia and I decided to break free from the group and take the cable car down to the bottom. It felt a little bit like a cop out, however I have always wanted to see the view from up there, and after doing that hike, I didn’t think I was going to be making my way up to the top again anytime soon. The cable car was so much bigger than I had imagines it to be. I would guess that somewhere around 20 people could fit inside of it, and the whole floor rotated so you could see the view from many different angles. It was pretty awesome, except for that I wasn’t too close to the window. I would definitely recommend finding a good spot as soon as you get into the car, and then holding your ground. People in there can be a little crazy…but I suppose that’s to be expected considering that Table is now one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

This past weekend, I mostly did low-key activities. It seems as though I’ve done most of the things that were on my Cape Town “bucket list”, so really all I’m trying to get around to now are shops and restaurants. This works out well, because I still have a lot of souvenirs and presents to buy for friends and family back home. The real challenge is proving to be getting people to actually share what kinds of things they want me to bring back for them. Then again, I could probably bring back a rock and people would be excited about it coming from Africa.

Tonight is First Thursday, which is basically when a lot of restaurants, stores and art galleries stay open late and people can mill around and check out what they have to offer. I went to this last month, and it was absolutely awesome. Unfortunately, last month we didn’t get there until pretty late, and we ate beforehand so we missed out on some of the best stuff there. We will be attending a play later in the evening, so hopefully tonight we will be able to get there pretty early, so as to not miss out on any of the stuff from last week! I’m already thinking about what I’m going to order at Honest Chocolate…
