Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex L will return to the home a better person for this experience

Abby & Alex at Farewell Dinner
This is it, I am currently packing my bags to head home and there aren’t any words to describe my feelings at this point. Last night was the final goodbye/thank-you dinner for the hosts of our internships which was extremely nice but very sad at the same time. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me especially at my internship but overall I am confident in saying that the internship experience has been the most enriching and enlightening for me, as well as where I have grown the most. It was a tough goodbye, but I know that I will return back to the U.S. with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of things I never would have if it had not been for this program. Often times at events like last night’s farewell dinner, I find myself sitting back and observing everything and everyone, taking it all in.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone laughing, dancing, and taking tons of photos. There was such an overwhelming sense of happiness in the room, making the goodbye’s a little easier, but also showing how this program has had such an effect on every single one of us. The bonds we have created with each other is unbreakable, considering we have all been on this rollercoaster of experiences together and supporting each other throughout.  Heading back to UConn will undeniably be a challenge, however I am confident that we will find support in each other when struggling with the New England culture shock. I am finally in the mindset of returning back home, but it is nice knowing that Cape Town has changed me into a better person and I will arrive home with a completely different outlook on life.
