Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline filling her final weeks fun and food

Another weekend in Cape Town gives me the opportunity to try to keep doing things that I would never do back at home. This weekend I went to Cape Town’s Ostrich Ranch and got to feed and sit on an ostrich. Back when I was in High School I use to get teased for being tall and I was called an ostrich so visiting this ranch made me think about those times in high school. When Mary, Molly, Elizabeth and I were about to sit on the ostrich, we saw the tour guide put what looked like a sack over the ostrich’s face in order for it not to make a commotion when we got on top. I can admit that I didn’t initially see the harm in it but looking back, it should be considered a violation against the ostrich. I can only imagine how many times tourists stop by the ranch and want to sit on the ostriches.

I also was able to try an ostrich burger for the first time and boy was that an experience. The burger wasn’t heavy but still very filling if that makes sense! (Definitely the best burger I’ve ever had and you can quote me on it!) Tomorrow I plan to hike Lions Head because I’ve never hiked before and some of my classmates are telling me that I should probably hike Lion’s Head because hiking Table could be a challenge for people who have never hiked before. Some of the students have also organized a braai at Loch Rd. on Sunday and I know that with everyone only seeing all of each other on Wednesday night’s or Thursdays, this will be one of the last times we will all get to come together as students of this program. It is these experiences that I will miss a lot. I will also miss going to different markets, trying to pinpoint the other tourists and trying free samples from every vendor. It is still only Saturday and as I am aware that I have a full plate of paper and other assignments to complete for my classes, I am trying to balance that with still trying to make what is left of the rest of my Cape Town experience. It still hasn’t hit me that 2 weeks from now I will be on a long flight to NYC. I actually don’t want to think about this yet.
