Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Caroline's musical adventures

Last week I was able to go to 2 concerts! On Monday I went to ParkLife Festival at Green Point Cricket Club in Cape Town. They had lots of local South African bands performing all day, starting at 11:30. They also had food trucks from local restaurants and shops - super good food. My favorite performances were by Al Bairre, Desmond and the Tutus, and of course Jeremy Loops. Jeremy Loops was amazing, and I had been dying to see him for a while now after my friend showed me his music year ago and raved about his live performances. (Shoutout to Ms Dani Haims)

And he lived up to the hype! He was incredible live - energetic, enthusiastic, infectious. I even got to the front of the stage for his performance, and it was awesome to be so close! Dream come true.

As his name hints at, Jeremy Loops plays with looping beats and melodies in his music. He even did it in his live performance, controlled by a box on the ground and a couple foot pedals. He is able to loop layers of music to create awesome sounds and beats without having to play everything at once. He created loops singing, playing the harmonica, the guitar, with the audience, and even with the sounds from a children's toy he brought out on stage. Super cool! - I hadn't seen anything like that live before.

At the end of his performance we waited patiently at the front of the stage to try to get a couple glimpses of Jeremy and possibly say hello. After about 10 minutes, he came out from around back and we were able to meet him! We even got to take a couple selfies.

On Thursday, we went to Kirstenbosh to one of their summer sunset concerts to see Of Monsters and Men. We packed dinner, snacks, drinks and blankets to have a bit of a picnic during the concert. By the time OMAM came on, the sun hat set and it was dark, which created a really cool atmosphere at the venue. The band itself was really good, and has a ton of members- more than I expected. If I remember correctly, they had 3 girls and 6 guys up on stage. They were great to watch live, and sounded really good. I got pretty close to the stage during their performance, and at the end of the concert I caught a guitar pick that the lead singer threw out into the crowd. It's pretty cool, bright red with the OMAM logo on it.

Last week was incredible, and I'm so glad I have been given the opportunity to do such amazing things here in Cape Town. This coming week is full of even more adventures and I can't wait. More to come soon!
