WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex Z bids farewell to mom and makes plans for remaining time in Cape Town

Monday was the most adrenaline filled day of my life. I began at work, but was picked up early so that my mom and I could go skydiving. The way up was completely serene, and I wasn’t nervous until they opened the plane door and we had to dangle our legs out of the side before our tandem guides pushed us into the air. That is certainly a rush I will never forget. (My feet are sweating just writing about this). After the jump, we had lunch at Coco Wahwah and I introduced my mom to my two favorite meals; chicken/avo/tomato trammazini and the chicken/avo/pesto salad. We devoured both and then headed to the aquarium. I geared up and headed into the predator tank where I was greeted by six massive ragged tooth sharks. The huge fish came to greet me and even Yoshi, the giant loggerhead sea turtle, stayed in place to let me scratch her shell.

Tuesday is sadly my mom’s last day. We began with taking a short tour of UCT and then heading to Glen Beach so she could see some more of the coast before she shipped back (to brown CT beaches). We then walked with Gregor up Lion’s Head and saw the beautiful 360 degree view from the summit. The weather was perfect and the traffic up the mountain was very little.

It’s going to be hard to make sure that I cram in the rest of the things that I want to do while I’m here, which mostly just involves spending time with my amazing coworkers. Sarah is always up to something (which I love), and her housemates are equally as chilled. So we have plans for this weekend for some crazy feat.

Trying to focus on school with the pressure of the days closing is difficult, but I’m trying to manage it along with free time and my activist project. Abby and I have plans for surfing before my activist project on Friday, and then Sunday, I’m finishing up my sea dives so that I can be 100% PADI certified! I will then be able to dive anywhere in the world. Yay!
