Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Mary's enjoying the final month while missing home a bit

On Friday morning I had the incredible opportunity to see Archbishop Desmond Tutu at St. George's Cathedral. We went to the short service he helped give (he gave us communion too)! I almost didn't go because I didn't know much about him or his work and I didn't feel qualified to meet him. But I'm so glad I went, and I definitely want to look more into his work now. During the service I was just thinking, we're all human beings here who can go in lots of different directions with our lives, yet he is someone who did so much and made such a huge impact. Yet here we all are, all human beings in the same room. It's crazy thinking of it that way.

This weekend I also went to the Of Monsters and Men concert with several other people on the trip. It was so much fun! Kirstenbosch Gardens is a lovely venue too. I was so glad to get to see a band I like (for much cheaper than in the US too).

On Sunday, Elizabeth, Amelia, and I went to World of Birds. It was so cool, I absolutely loved it!! My parents love birds so I was taking a ton of photos to show them later. There were so many birds along with other kinds of animals. There's this one designated monkey area where monkeys can crawl on you, and it's so funny. We also saw goats, honey badgers, alpacas, penguins, turtles, many kinds of parrots and owls, etc. It was really really cool!

It's weird knowing there's only a month left. I'm at a point in this program where I want this last month to be really long so I can stay here and see Cape Town more, but at the same time I'm missing home a bit. Maybe it's because a lot of other students' families have been coming around this time so it makes me miss my parents more. But it's ok, it'll make the reunion sweeter that way. I can't wait to share photos and stories with them
