WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Kayla finally made it up Table Mountain

We are officially into the final stretch of our time in Cape Town. Everyone is busy making lists of final to-dos before we leave. I feel a little bit less frantic than some because I’m honestly amazed by just how much we have been able to fit into our time thus far. This past weekend I finally did the one thing I’ve been planning to do since I was accepted to the Cape Town program: hike Table Mountain.

Yesterday Maria, Meg O., Megan H, Isabel, and I left for hiking mid afternoon. We were all a little nervous because we’ve heard stories about our friends saying it was treacherous and that they got a little lost along the way. We took the easiest and most straightforward trail called Platteklip Gorge. It took us a little over two hours to get up. It was extremely difficult but honestly, so worth it because it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced. At one moment, I stopped to take a water break and it was completely silent. All I could hear was water drizzling down the mountain and birds chirping and it really gave me a very refreshing moment to take in the fact that I’ve been living in South Africa. This is a fact I have to remind myself constantly because it is really crazy for me to conceptualize where we are on a map compared to where home is.

When we got to the top, the view did not disappoint. You could see mountains, the city, and the beach, aka all the wonderful things that Cape Town has to offer. After hiking Table Mountain, Maria and I looked at each other and said that this, like bungee jumping, is one of those moments that makes you feel like you can accomplish anything. I’ve had those moments several times since being in Cape Town and it’s truly amazing being pushed to your limits at times you may not expect and being able to overcome it. We took the cable car down while the sun was setting and it was absolutely stunning. The cable car was playing “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” through the speakers and we sang along with twenty strangers. It was overall an incredible day and I’m happy to have crossed the number one thing off my Cape Town bucket list.
