WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Sydney shocked to realize how little time is left

The other day I looked at my calendar and saw how many weeks I had left and was shocked at how little time I had left here in Cape Town. At the beginning of the trip I was so conscious of how many months we had left in order to reassure myself that I still had plenty of time to do everything I wanted. However, at some point I stopped thinking of the time and everything became so normal it started to feel as if I have lived in Cape Town longer than I have. Now that the trip is coming to an end I’m beginning to look back on all I’ve done, the people I have befriended and I don’t want to leave, but at the same time I am ready to return home. Just like every semester of school as it comes to an end I want to go home and just relax and be with family. Although I will miss everyone I know I will be back so it makes it a little better. However, the trip is not over for a few more weeks so I plan on making the most out of the time I have left.

A prime example of this happened this past Sunday. A few of my housemates and myself went kayaking in Simons Town, where we were able to be up close and personal with penguins. This was a great experience for me since it was my first time kayaking ever and it was a pretty big learning curve for me. I started off paddling backwards as my partner was going forward, which caused confusions as to why we were not going faster and falling so far behind everyone else. Once that little problem was taken care of I had to learn how to correctly hold the paddles. Overall it was a mess of confusion, but in the end I figured it out and my partner and myself were able to redeem ourselves and were at the front of the pack. Despite the sore arms from doing everything wrong I enjoyed the experience and am glad that I was able to learn something new.

In addition helping at an orphanage in which other in my program and I are able to play and give love to children is amazing. They are all so sweet and have really gotten attached to some of the girls and cry when we leave. Being able to paint the fence in their drive way was a great bonding experience for all of us and really awesome and fun. It didn’t feel like we were doing work, since we wanted to do it and were listening to music and laughing the whole time. The point of painting the fence is to make the place more recognizable to people that come to visit. People have passed the place in the past, but now with a bright colorful fence with their logo it will definitely be easier for people to know where to go.
