Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Charity's time at Molo Songololo

This week at Molo we were preparing for our VCT (Voluntary Counselling Testing) awareness campaign which we had at the Delft South Taxi Rank on Saturday from 9 am – 2pm. Overall, I think that it went well! We had almost 45 individuals get tested for HIV/AIDS with Life Choices which was the organization that handled the testing for our event. Some high schoolers from Rosendaal High (which was one of the schools that we did our workshops at) helped us out by being our drummers for the event which helped draw attention to what we were doing to folks that were walking around. We were in a really good location for our event because there are lots of local stores, the police department, fire department and a Kwik Spar next to the Delft South Taxi Rank. We were able to attract a lot of folks that were just hanging around and had a few other organizations that also do work around raising awareness for HIV/AIDS prevention, like the Desmond Tutu Foundation. The kids were as cute as ever and well behaved throughout the event. There was a magician and food for the community and all of our volunteers. We have another VCT awareness campaign in Atlantis next Saturday, April 9th from 9 am – 2pm. I expect that we will also have a great turn out there and that the event will be a success. This week in the office, we’ll be prepping for the next campaign and trying to fine tune everyone’s roles for the event so that it can be smooth sailing for Saturday. If you’re in the area, definitely come through! It just so happened that on the same day the Fuller Center for Housing Western Cape had a dedication ceremony for the house that we’ve been helping to build. Since the time of the dedication conflicted with the awareness campaign I was not able to attend. However, it was great to have so many culminations of the work that I’ve been doing come together this weekend and see the small impact that I’ve been able to have during my time here.
