WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Amelia's full week following the excursion

After such a long spring break it was difficult to get back into the swing of things since everyone was still on holiday once we got back. So before we headed back to our internships the following a small group of us decided to hike Table Mountain. It was my first time and I honestly thought I wasn't going to make it once we got to the end which is the hardest part. But with the help of my great friends we made it up the top in about 2 hours. The view from the mountain was absolutely incredible. You could see Cape Town for all of her beauty and how large it is. As I was realizing that our final days here are approaching I was filled with sadness but joy as well because this place has taught me so much and connected me some of the most amazing people here. But with all that being said I still have a little more time here do it's not over yet!

This week at my internship was interesting because I planned a huge event for Human Rights Day that I couldn't attend as I was in JoBurg but I got to see the reports from it and it made to the newspaper which was exciting! We also attended a workshop at the Rape Crisis Network with these girls we've been mentoring from Delft. The workshop was very interesting because we had one guy there and the rest of the people were from disadvantaged communities so it was cool to their perspectives on the issue and what they would do if someone they knew was raped. It was a bit hectic though because after the workshop to which the girls were great during, we learned from someone in the community that the girls were being bad and getting themselves into a lot of trouble even though most of them are very young and even have kids of their own. It was difficult to hear what they've been up to whenever we weren't around and it made me question if you could really change a person by giving them knowledge of the right choices they should be making because at the end of the day it's still there choice to be made.

The rest of my week was a lot of fun because I went to see Of Monsters and Men at Kirstenbosch Gardens which is one of my favorite venues to see music here. The band was amazing and I somehow keep making it a habit of mine to stand in the front of all the concerts I've been to here which was great! The following day I decided to go out to Long Street with some of my coworkers and their friends. It was really cool because I met people from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Australia and more. We even kept making a joke that our group resembled the United Nations because we had so many countries being represented! It was cool to hear everyone's stories and what brought them to Cape Town. It just showed me how amazing this place is as it attracts people from all over the world for its beauty but mainly for the people that are always so kind and warmhearted here. I just love this place so much!
