Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Abby's excited to start getting ready

My name is Abby Colburn and I’m a senior Allied Health Sciences major with a concentration in Health Sciences. I’m also pre-med and just applied to medical school. I wanted to be a part of this program because it is very unique from the other programs offered. I really enjoyed the Neuroscience in Salamanca, Spain study abroad trip I went on this past summer and it pushed me to jump at any chance to travel. But I wanted a different experience, and I thought this trip would be perfect with the focus on human rights, an entirely different culture, and the appeal of an internship in the medical field. I also know many people who have gone on this trip and absolutely loved it.
Through this experience, I hope to broaden my knowledge on South Africa, which I don’t currently know a lot about. I’m also looking forward to gaining a lot of new skills through my internship. Now that I know I have been accepted to the program, I’m super excited to start getting ready and go! I’m a little sad to miss my last semester in Storrs and be away from friends and family for 3 months, but I know that this will be an invaluable experience that I may never have the opportunity to have again.
