My name is Abby Colburn and I’m a senior Allied Health
Sciences major with a concentration in Health Sciences. I’m also pre-med and
just applied to medical school. I wanted to be a part of this program because
it is very unique from the other programs offered. I really enjoyed the
Neuroscience in Salamanca, Spain study abroad trip I went on this past summer
and it pushed me to jump at any chance to travel. But I wanted a different
experience, and I thought this trip would be perfect with the focus on human
rights, an entirely different culture, and the appeal of an internship in the
medical field. I also know many people who have gone on this trip and
absolutely loved it.
Through this experience, I hope to broaden my
knowledge on South Africa, which I don’t currently know a lot about. I’m also
looking forward to gaining a lot of new skills through my internship. Now that
I know I have been accepted to the program, I’m super excited to start getting
ready and go! I’m a little sad to miss my last semester in Storrs and be away
from friends and family for 3 months, but I know that this will be an
invaluable experience that I may never have the opportunity to have again.
