Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Paige is really looking forward to her internship and classes

Hello!! My name is Paige and I am a sophomore in Allied Health. I heard about this program through my academic advisor and immediately fell in love. The internship is what really appealed to me—in Cape Town I hope to be placed in a hospital or somewhere that I can support the South African community through health care, which is something I am very passionate about.
Here at uconn my schedule is pretty much packed with sciences and labs, which is why I am really looking forward to the classes we will be taking in Cape Town. Learning about the history and politics of South Africa, taking classes about gender and race, and being immersed into such a unique community, I feel like I will gain invaluable knowledge about the world in places outside of the US, and will develop into a more culturally sound citizen.
I’m also really excited about the activist project that we will each be doing. I have always been a huge fan of soccer and thought the soccer league that others worked with in previous years was a great idea. I would love to get a few people together to continue the project!
Right now I am feeling more excited than ever about this trip. Although I am a bit apprehensive about being in a very different environment for such an extended period of time, I have a feeling that as soon as I get there all my nerves will disappear. As we stay busy I’m sure our time will feel like its passing too quickly and we won’t want to leave! Can’t wait to meet you all and explore South African’s beauty together!
