WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Derek amped and grateful for this amazing opportunity

Hi! My name is Derek RoyDavis and I am a junior at UCONN. I am an Allied Health Science major with a Concentration in Health Sciences and a minor in business fundamentals. I plan to enroll in a physician assistant graduate program after graduation.

The Cape Town program has been my first and only choice for education abroad since my freshman year. Education abroad means so much more to me than a vacation, to me, it should act as an experience that challenges the individual to develop one’s character. This, I felt could only be accomplished by immersing myself in a place with such rich history like South Africa. In addition, I have held a huge emphasis on attending a study abroad that provides an internship. It means the most to me that I will get hands on experience related to my field while aiding a country that has a huge deficit in health care.

During my time at Cape Town I hope to challenge myself. Thus, I have consciously chosen the internship that I know will take me out of my comfort zone (but I am also super interested in). Helping more than 300 people a day in a clinic will be hectic but I hope that I will find the confidence in my skills to confirm my passion to become a healthcare provider.

The moment I read the acceptance email’s header my mind went blank with excitement and then I had the stupidest grin on my face for the remainder of the day. I cannot express how amped and grateful I am to be given such an amazing opportunity and I am elated that it is finally confirmed. I have heard so many stories of past participants and I’m excited to create my own; nevertheless, with such an amazing group of people. I cannot wait to get to know, learn, and evolve with these brilliant students who will make this program truly special!
