Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex Z can't wait for this new chapter in her life

Hey, my name is Alex Zapatka and I’m a Biology Education major in my sophomore year. I decided to participate in this program because of the rich culture. I first fell in love with the sights and then developed a passion for the people and lifestyle. I had looked at European cities, but concluded that those trips are something I can do any time. Cape Town is a once in a lifetime experience.

When I get to Cape Town, I hope to succeed at my internship and do well with my grades, especially since I am anticipating the Neag School for Education. I’m a transfer student who was a student athlete my freshman year, which had prevented me from having opportunities such as study abroad. I would love to create experiences and go on adventures that will surely last a lifetime.

After refreshing my emails for what seemed like the millionth time, the acceptance letter made me beyond happy. I went into work walking on air and my coworkers took me out to celebrate after close. My friends and family are really excited for me, though they’ve expressed that they’ll really miss me. That is definitely going to be the hardest part for me, as I’ve never been away from them for so long. I’ll be homesick, but hopefully between the internship, school and the beach, I’ll be plenty distracted. All in all, I’m ready to take this trip head on. I can’t wait for this new chapter in life.
