Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Collette counting down the days until departure

My name is Collette Dorbandt, and I am currently a junior pursuing a major in Biological Sciences. I have never traveled outside of North America, and always dreamed of studying abroad in a location that was both culturally and environmentally different. South Africa seemed like the perfect option as it offered me a chance to do this, while still fitting in with my overall plan of study. The internship component, as I’m sure with many other applicants, was also a huge selling point. Given that, I really look forward to getting experience in the healthcare field, especially in a country whose medical system differs from ours so greatly. I also hope to learn about South Africa’s rich and complex history.

It is almost surreal to think that I will really be travelling to South Africa in less than three months. As with many of my fellow travelers, I am a little nervous for the drastic change in culture, and the idea of being so far from friends and family. However, what comes with those nerves is also pure excitement and anxiousness to go! While I will be leaving many friends behind, I will be taking many with me, and heading towards many future ones. I cannot wait to see what kind of relationships I form with my peers, along with the many wonderful South Africans I will get the pleasure to meet. Already counting down the days until departure!
