Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Lily looking forward to learning more

Hello, my name is Lily Alfano and I'm a junior double majoring in Biological Sciences and Human Rights, and following the pre-med track. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to combine humanitarianism and medicine and would love to work internationally.

I have studied South Africa in many different human rights courses and have always been amazed at the dense history the country has. I look forward to learning more about apartheid and all of the country's political history in the place where it actually happened, while comparing all that I learn to the culture as it is today. One of my favorite aspects of the South Africa program is the internship opportunity, which is an amazing chance to submerge ourselves into a different culture and learn first hand while also working with an organization and helping many people. I am absolutely thrilled to be focusing on international medicine and having the opportunity to work with both medical professionals and recovering patients. As an EMT, I love providing pre-hospital medical care, but this internship will give me an opportunity to work in the hospital and help children who are recovering from surgeries.

I cannot wait to see and learn about as much as possible in our time in South Africa, from endangered wildlife to the political structures and activist movements. January can’t come fast enough!
