Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Pauline hoping to discover what she is truly passionate about

Hello! My name is Pauline Elmore and I am a Sociology major and also a senior at the University of Connecticut. While really exploring all of the opportunities the program provides, I know that the program ultimately focuses and values topics and ideas of my interest. I enjoy having discussions about the ways in which human rights transcends on a global scale, and the program will allows me to have these discussions while getting hands-on experience with serving as a peer educator. It will also allow me to observe educational disparity in a developing part of our world.

Rather than just stepping on the grounds of what some call "The Homeland", I want to not only engage with others on a personal level, but also engage with myself; hopefully discovering what I am truly passionate about. Since being accepted into this program, I am anticipating what culture shock I will experience as well as what types of relationships I will build with the people surrounding me. Adding to this, I am looking forward to learning more about the rich history of Cape Town and hearing about hidden stories about Nelson Mandela. I am one that truly believes that what is meant to be will be and I just know that there is a reason why I will be in Cape Town regardless of my own control. I just want to help someone; I just want to touch someone's life.
