Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Maria's sure January cannot come soon enough

Hello, my name is Maria Ortega. I am a junior studying neurodevelopment and speech acquisition with double major in psychology. I have always wanted to spend time volunteering in Africa. When i heard about the Cape Town program as a freshman, I fell in love with the internship aspect of the program. I would rather vacation in Europe then study abroad. I decided that I would love to study abroad in a place that I would not necessary vacation to but rather somewhere that I could leave a footprint behind. In Cape Town, I hope to further foster my passion to work with children in the medical setting. I also hope to create a deeper sense of empathy by learning and embracing the culture of Cape Town.

When I received my acceptance email, I actually started screaming. I have been dreaming of that moment since the beginning of freshman year. I'm still in shock that I'm finally going because my dream is coming true. Cape Town is a leap towards my future as a pediatric physician.  January cannot come soon enough!
