Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Amelia eager to be enriched by the vibrant culture of Cape Town

My name is Amelia Subervi, I am a Psychology and Political Science double major, and I am a junior.   I decided to participate in this program because I knew I wanted to go abroad before I graduated however I’ve never been out of the country and knew that I would one day vacation in Europe and Southern America.  South Africa was truly a once in a life time opportunity that i’m ecstatic to take advantage of.

I really hope to enrich myself in the vibrant culture Cape Town has to offer. It’s a city with so much history and poverty so above all i’m excited to learn all there is to know about a place so foreign to me.

After being accepted words can’t even begin to describe my enthusiasm. Every time I see South Africa mentioned in a textbook, class room reference, or even in the news I get excited. After recently seeing the huge protest that went on this past week I couldn't be happier to be fortunate enough to go to a place where so many people want to see change and will do all they could to get it. I’m excited to see myself outside of the vacuum of my normal life in America by being placed entirely outside my comfort zone and sharing this experience with so many great people. South Africa I’m ready for you!
