Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Megan's eager to expand her knowlege of the world

My name is Megan Handau, I'm a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

I decided to commit to this program because I am really eager to expand my knowledge of the world and other people's perceptions. My majors are focused on people, when it comes down to it, and how their experiences have shaped the societal institutions we live in. If I were to only stay in Connecticut, or even the US my entire life, I wouldn't be able to accurately understand the people that my career is supposed to be based off of. I want to expand my knowledge of human experience past the borders of this state, this country, and the context of my upbringing, in order to inform my experience as I go forward and my understanding of how people operate.

While in Cape Town, I want to try things that I've never tried before and wouldn't have the opportunity to do here in CT, learn about South African culture and history, and meet people that can teach me something.

After committing to the program, I am extremely excited. I honestly want to book a flight for tomorrow and just go. I have wanted to travel my whole life, so the prospect of going to the opposite side of the world for months is a dream. I'm a little bit nervous about all the day to day things that will be different, like having to budget my money and my phone use. But I can't wait to learn about a completely new way of life while getting learn about things I love.
