Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Becca is apprehensive, excited, and nervous

Hi! My name is Rebecca Kaufman and I am a sophomore political science and human rights major in the Fast-Track Masters in Public Administration. I am specifically interested in sustainable development and how it relates to human rights and political institutions and interactions. I decided to study in Cape Town because I believe its rich culture and recent history will be able to inform these interests interactively.
I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the global and local cultural, environmental, political, and economic developments occurring as South Africa emerges from a period of sociopolitical unrest and transforms into a country recognized for its progressive and comprehensive human rights legislation.

I spent this past summer studying abroad and interning in Guatemala. Here, I realized that the most profound education a person will ever receive happens when they are challenged and forced to critically think about, and then apply the material they have learned in classes to real life to help real people in real and dire situations. I am apprehensive, excited, and nervous for the experiences I will have in Cape Town because I know that they will shape me in ways I can’t yet imagine.
