Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Alex L hoping to make this the best few months of her life

My name is Alex Liner, and I am a junior studying Speech Language and Hearing Sciences with a minor in Psychology. I decided to pursue the UConn in Cape Town study abroad program simply because it was the most unique program UConn had to offer, and I had only heard fantastic things about the program from former participants. Like others have stated before, I feel as though this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to travel to South Africa for this amount of time, to truly become immersed in the culture and feel like a local while attending the University of Cape Town. In addition, the internship offered will give me and the other students real-life and hands on experiences in the professional fields we love and are most passionate about. Personally, I am ecstatic that I will get the opportunity to intern with a Speech Pathologist and truly see what the profession has in store, as well as directly helping the community.
While on this journey, I hope to not only learn as much as I can about the history and culture of South Africa, but to learn more about myself as well. I hope to go on as many adventures as humanly possible, to see all that Cape Town as to offer, to spend time with locals, and to make relationships that will last a lifetime with the other participants on this program. I hope to make this the best few months of my life.
Now that I have been accepted, the nervousness has subsided and I am now counting down the days until we land in South Africa and start our adventure!
